Williamsburg, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University volleyball team played in two games on Saturday. The matchups were part of the Cumberlands Invite. The Bulldogs fell short in each contest as UCU fell in a valiant effort against Northwestern Ohio, while Cumberlands would defeat Union to remain undefeated on the season.
First Game:
The match went five sets, but it was Northwestern Ohio that picked up a 3-2 win (22-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9.) The Bulldogs had five players register at least 10 digs.
Sydney Worde led UCU in digs with 16, while Lara Gomes De Castro and Maddy McGaughey each totaled 13. Raquel Kessler totaled 12 digs, while Sloan Coursey recorded 10.
Kessler led Union in kills with 15, while Katherine Acosta accounted for 10. Berkli Benefield totaled eight kills, while Emily Shumaker tallied seven and Talyn McCaslin recorded five.
McGaughey led UCU in assists with 21, while Coursey totaled 12. Worde, Gomes De Castro, and Jasmine Porter combined to record 12 assists. The Bulldogs fell to 1-6 on the season, while Northwestern Ohio advanced to 7-7.
Second Game:
The Bulldogs fell short as Cumberlands won 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-20). Kessler led UCU in kills with 13, while Shumaker tallied five. Benefield totaled four kills, while Acosta totaled three.
McGaughey led Union in assists with 15, while Coursey recorded 12. Worde led UCU in digs with 17. Coursey and Kessler each tallied nine digs, while McGaughey totaled six. The Bulldogs fell to 1-7, while Cumberlands advanced to 13-0.
