Champions of Character
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character initiative equips student-athletes with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to make ethical decisions on and off the field. Grounded in five core values—integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership—this program ensures these principles are not only taught but actively practiced, measured, and reinforced at all NAIA institutions.
As a proud NAIA member, Union Commonwealth University has developed a robust Champions of Character campus program that includes:
-
Ongoing character education for all student-athletes through the Champions of Character Live 5 orientation program.
-
Professional development opportunities for coaches and athletics administrative staff, including completion of the Character-Driven Coaching course.
-
A strong emphasis on hospitality, game management, and conduct during athletic events to foster a positive and respectful competitive environment.
-
Servant leadership initiatives designed to cultivate student leadership and promote meaningful engagement within the campus and local community.
-
Continuous oversight and assessment of program implementation and progress, conducted in collaboration with Union Commonwealth and the NAIA.
In addition to the Champions of Character, the NAIA recently launched its new campaign: "The Right Way to Play."
"The world of college sports has undergone a seismic shift in the past decade, with changes that often stray from the values that once defined it," said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. "The NAIA champions the authentic spirit of college athletics, allowing student-athletes to compete in sports they are passionate about, while also emphasizing academics, character development, and community involvement. Now more than ever, the NAIA is the right way to play."
