Sports Medicine
The Union Commonwealth Sports Medicine staff consists of five full-time certified/licensed athletic trainers.
The staff ATCs work under the guidelines of the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) as well as the Kentucky Athletic Trainers Society (KATS) to provide prevention, rehabilitation, treatment as well as performance improvement of injuries.
Union Commonwealth University Sports Medicine works alongside Access Family Health, Barbourville ARH and Lexington Clinic to provide comprehensive care for our student athletes that is critical to their success both on and off the field.
We have the privilege of working with highly qualified orthopedic surgeons such as Dr. Gardiner, Dr. Grantham and Dr. Hester from the Lexington Clinic as they perform our pre-season physicals and evaluate many of our athletes throughout the year. We have a wonderful team of physicians that give top quality care to the athletes that we refer.
The athletic training facilities at Union Commonwealth provide care for all injured Union Commonwealth athletes. The athletic trainers are on duty for three seasons a year (Fall, Winter, Spring), and work during preseason conditioning camps in the summer. The athletic trainers use their skills and knowledge to prevent, evaluate, treat, rehabilitate, and perform functional exams on athletic injuries incurred by athletes during practices and games.
