The Bulldogs win in five sets against KCU

Grayson, Ky. – The Union College volleyball team played at Kentucky Christian on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Bulldogs won the matchup in five sets.

KCU held a 20-7 lead in the first set. Union responded with a 12-3 run, but the Lady Knights won the set 25-19. The Bulldogs began the second set with a 9-3 run. Morgan Stacy recorded Union's 15th kill of the set to give the Orange and Black a 25-18 win in the set.

The Bulldogs recorded 15 kills in the third set, but Kentucky Christian tallied 16 as the Lady Knights won the set 25-23. Union began the fourth set with an 8-3 run. The Bulldogs closed the set with a 10-3 run to win it 25-15.

In the fifth set, the score was tied 14-14 when Stacy recorded a kill. That was followed with a kill by Raquel Kessler as the Bulldogs won the game 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 16-14).

Kessler led all players in kills with 23, while Emily Shumaker registered 15 and Michaela Cox tallied 12. Stacy accounted for eight kills. Maddy McGaughey led all players with 32 assists, while Sarah Charkosky recorded 23.

Nicole Almestica led all players with 27 digs, while Charkosky recorded 15. McGaughey registered 13 digs; Lara Gomes De Castro tallied 10.

"Took lots of focus and options today to get going, but the bottom line is; we pulled out a tough match to accomplish our goals this week," Union head coach Jeremy Wise said.

The Bulldogs are now 11-15 (10-7 AAC), while Kentucky Christian is 1-22 (1-16 AAC). Up next for Union is a home game against Bryan on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m.
