Union volleyball falls in both games on Friday

Williamsburg, Ky. – The 2023 regular season began today for the Union College volleyball team. The Bulldogs played twice on Friday in the Cumberlands Invite, and fell short in each matchup.

 

First Game:

Union's first game was against Indiana Southeast. The first set was tied 9-9 before Indiana Southeast went on a 16-3 run to win the set 25-12. Southeast won the second set 25-14.

In the third set, the Bulldogs tallied four straight points to take a 4-1 lead in the set. Later in the set, Union won five straight points, but Indiana Southeast won 25-15. Union fell short 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-15.)

Emily Shumaker led Union in kills with six, while Lara Gomes De Castro and Maddy McGaughey each tallied a team-leading eight digs.

 

Second Game:

The Bulldogs' second matchup of the day was against Tennessee Southern. In the opening set, the Bulldogs led 11-6. Of those 11 points, six were scored via kill as Shumaker, Raquel Kessler, Michaela Cox, each tallied two.

Despite the 11-6 lead, Tennessee Southern won the first set 25-22. After falling short in the second set, the Bulldogs had a 16-12 lead in the third.

Tennessee Southern only allowed four points throughout the remainder of the set as the Bulldogs dropped the third set 25-20. The Bulldogs fell in the second game 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-20).

Of Union's 27 kills in the second matchup, Kessler led the team with nine. McGaughey tallied a team-leading 11 digs.

 

The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the season. Union plays twice tomorrow as the Bulldogs will face Ohio Christian at 5:30 p.m. and Cumberlands at 7:30 p.m. with both games being played at Cumberlands.
