Union women's track and field outdoor season preview

Barbourville, Ky. - The 2024 outdoor track and field season kicks off this Friday for Union College as the Bulldogs compete in the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet.

For a preview of the season, we held a Q&A with head coach Chris Jelks.

How do you feel about transitioning from the indoor to the outdoor season?

I think outdoor will be more successful as we will add more athletes to events.

What are your expectations for this season?

With the additions of athletes we will surprise some people. The key is to stay healthy and injury free.

What do you consider to be the team's strengths?

To succeed in track, you need to have a well-rounded team. For us, we have a good field and running. Again, it's a numbers game.

Which returning players are you most excited about?

Payton Ellison is going after another conference title. Preston Frost is eager to tackle the hurdles. Erin Pease in the Heptathlon will be fun to watch.

Who are the standout newcomers/transfers expected to make an impact?

We have a lot of freshmen, and they are all eager to get started and we will surprise some people.

The Bulldogs begin their season at the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet on Friday, March 15.
