Union women’s swimming and diving places third at AAC Championships

Kingsport, Tenn. – The Union College women's swimming and diving team placed third in the AAC championships this last week. They recorded one first-place finish, an AAC record, and 13 top-five finishes.

 

Day One:

The Bulldogs were third overall with a total score of 142. Emma Phillips recorded the highest finish for the Bulldogs. She placed first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.74.

With this time, Phillips broke the AAC record in the event. Her time in the event is the fifth-best time in the NAIA this season.

Lise Puissant, Philips, Dori Jozsa, and Ceci Gimenez Martinez swam in the 200-yard medley relay. They placed third with a time of 1:49.81.

This group also competed in the 800-yard freestyle relay. They recorded a time of 7:54.60 to secure second place. Both times are season bests for the Bulldogs.

Puissant and Gimenez Martinez competed in the 500-yard freestyle. Pussiant recorded a time of 5:14.06 to secure second place and an NAIA qualifying time. Gimenez placed fourth with a time of 5:34.62.

 

Day Two:

The Bulldogs remained in third with a total score of 310. Puissant, Philips, Jozsa, and Gimenez Martinez swam in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. They placed second in both events with two more season bests.

Puissant secured a second-place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:47.77 and an NAIA B-Cut. In the 200-yard freestyle, Gimenez Martinez finished with a time of 2:01.29 to secure fifth place and an NAIA B-Cut.

Phillips secured a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.48. That time ranks 13th-best in the NAIA this season.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Puissant placed third with a final time of 59.99 for her second B-Cut of the weekend.

 

Day Three:

Jozsa started the day off in the 100-yard freestyle. She secured second-place with a time of 53.38 and an NAIA B-Cut. That time is the 21st-best time in the NAIA this season.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Phillips recorded a time of 2:24.63 to secure second place and her third national qualifying time for the event.

Puissant, Philips, Jozsa, and Gimenez Martinez swam in the 400-yard freestyle relay. They secured second place with a time of 3:37.58 for another season-best for the Bulldogs.

 

The Bulldogs finished third overall with a total score of 422. Up next for Union is the NAIA National Championships on Wednesday, March 6.
