Women's soccer drops season opener

PORTSMITH, Ohio - Shawnee State (Ohio) caught fire offensively late in the first half and never let up, sending the Union women's soccer team to a 8-0 loss in its season opener Wednesday night,

Already up 1-0, the Bears scored twice in a 1:22 span to triple that lead by halftime. Frederika Ntumba and Carlota Ipina Taylor, who had three and two goals on the night respectively, both found the back of the net over the final four minutes of the first half and that dominance carried over into the second, where Shawnee State scored five more times.

As good as the Bear offense was, the defense may have been even better, as the Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off the entire game.

In the loss, Bulldog goalie Madison Hebert had a career-high 14 saves.

Union hopes for better results the next time out, as it travels to face Cumberland (Tenn.) at 1 p.m. Sunday. The teams were originally scheduled to play in Barbourville on Aug. 20, before the game was postponed until this Sunday.
