Union softball falls in doubleheader on Senior Day against Montreat

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team hosted Montreat on Saturday in a doubleheader, which featured Senior Day for the Bulldogs.

Union recognized Megan Merritt, Kaley Harris, Kayla Richardson, Abby Gilbert, Ryleigh McLeskey, Shaylin Lewis, and Megan McGinley following the doubleheader.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs fell short 11-1 in five innings. In the bottom of the first inning, Merritt scored UCU's lone run in the matchup. She reached first off a single before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scoring via a wild pitch.

Merritt registered two hits in the matchup, which was tied with three other players for the most in the game. Merritt, Ryleigh Petrey, and Kinsley Redmon each registered a double in the matchup. Shaylin Lewis also recorded a hit.

Carly Cain and Jeweleyette Lilley each pitched in the matchup for UCU. Lilley allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

 

Game Two:

The Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-5 lead. Despite the early lead, Union fell short 19-8 in five innings.

Merritt and Petrey each led UCU in hits with three, while Redmon and Briley Robbins each totaled two. Tori Turner, Katie Fister, and Shaylin Lewis each tallied a hit in the game.

The Bulldogs registered two home runs in the matchup courtesy of Petrey and Merritt. Petrey's occurred in the first at bat of the side, while Merritt connected on a two-run homer later in the inning. Petrey and Fister each tallied a double in the matchup.

Fister, Taylor Sain, and Lily Marsh each pitched in the matchup for UCU. Marsh allowed zero earned runs and five hits in 2.2 innings pitched, while recording five strikeouts.

 

The Bulldogs are now 5-13 (3-7 AAC) this season, while Montreat is 19-11 (7-5 AAC). Up next for UCU is a home conference doubleheader against Columbia on Sunday, March 23, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
