Union softball sweeps Montreat in doubleheader

Marion, NC. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team won both games on Friday at Montreat. The Bulldogs won 4-2 in eight innings and 8-7 in seven innings.

Today's wins mark the second doubleheader sweep on the road this season for Union. The series also marked a record-setting day for the Bulldogs' Sarah Lowe. With two home runs in the opening matchup, Lowe has recorded a school record nine homers this season.

 

Game One:

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Union's Megan Merritt tallied a solo home run. Two at bats later, Lowe recorded a solo homer as well to give Union a 2-0 lead.

Montreat scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the seventh, which sent the game to an eighth inning.

In the top of the eighth with one out, Taylor Whisonant singled to left center field. On the next at bat, Lowe's second home run of the matchup gave the Bulldogs a two-run lead. Union won 4-2 in eight innings.

Leea Cole pitched the entire game for the Bulldogs. Whisonant and Lowe each tallied two hits, which led the team.

 

Game Two:

In the top of the first inning with two outs, Cole scored off an RBI double by Lowe. Later in the side with the bases loaded, Kaley Harris registered a two-RBI single that scored Lowe and Kayla Keller. The Bulldogs led 3-0 after the top of the first, but Montreat led 4-3 after two innings.

In the top of the third with two runners on base and two outs, an RBI double by Ryleigh Petrey scored Keller and Shelby Easton to give Union a 5-4 lead. The Bulldogs took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth when Merritt and Lowe scored off a two-RBI double by Keller.

The Bulldogs led 7-5 entering the seventh inning. Union extended its lead in the top of the seventh when Petrey scored off an RBI single by Cole. The Bulldogs won the matchup 8-7 in seven innings.

Cole, Lowe, and Petrey each tallied a game-leading three hits. Cain, Dixon, and Cole each pitched in the matchup for Union. Dixon was the winning pitcher, while Cole recorded a save. Dixon allowed three earned runs, while registering four strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.

 

The Bulldogs are now 13-22 (11-13 AAC) this season, while Montreat is 29-17 (11-15 AAC). Up next for Union is a road conference match against Milligan on Sunday, April 21, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
