Union falls in doubleheader at Pikeville

Pikeville, Ky. – On Wednesday, the Union Commonwealth University softball team fell short at Pikeville in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs fell 6-4 in the first game, while falling 13-3 in the second matchup in five innings.

Megan Merritt had an impressive performance with two home runs in the first matchup, which was followed by a two-RBI double in the second game. Kayla Keller also tallied a home run for Union in the opening game of the doubleheader.

 

Game One:

A home run by Keller in the top of the second inning gave Union a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Merritt recorded a homer to center field, which gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Merritt registered her second home run of the game. Merritt's second homer of the matchup was a two-run home run as Leea Cole scored as well.

Despite a 4-0 lead for Union going into the sixth inning, Pikeville won 6-4 in seven innings. Cole and Carly Cain each pitched in the matchup for the Bulldogs.

 

Game Two:

UPike tallied five runs in the top of the first inning. In the top of the second inning, Union's Shelby Easton tallied a double with two outs. On the next at bat, Megan McGinley recorded an RBI single to score Easton.

Entering the fifth inning, the Bulldogs trailed 13-1. Union had runners at second and third with no outs when Merritt hit a two-RBI double that scored Cole and Tori Turner. Pikeville won the game 13-3 in five innings. Cole, Cain, Kerry Dixon, and Jeweleyette Lilley each pitched in the matchup for Union.

 

The Bulldogs are now 9-16 (7-9 AAC) this season, while UPike is 13-12 (9-7 (AAC). Senior Day is up next for Union as the Bulldogs will host Brenau in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, beginning at noon.
