The Bulldogs sweep Bluefield in doubleheader

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College softball team defeated Bluefield in both games on Monday. The Bulldogs won the first matchup 8-3 in seven innings, while winning the second game 12-4.

Union has won five of its past six games with the only defeat in that stretch coming in a 12-9 game against Truett McConnell.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Sarah Lowe stole home. Union added to that in the second inning when Ryleigh Petrey scored off an RBI double by Harris, while Harris would score off an RBI single by Megan McGinley.

In the top of the third inning, Bluefield scored three runs to tie the score 3-3. Union retook the lead in the fourth inning when an RBI double by Megan Merritt scored Kaley Harris. On the next at bat, an RBI triple by Sarah Lowe scored Megan Merritt and Tori Turner.

Lowe scored on the next at bat via an RBI single by Taylor Whisonant. Union led 7-3 after the fourth inning. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the sixth inning when Leea Cole scored on an error. Union won 8-3 in seven innings.

Leea Cole pitched the entire game for Union. Cole allowed six hits and three earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched. Lowe, Whisonant, and McGinley each tallied a game-leading two hits.

 

Game Two:

Bluefield scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Union responded in the bottom of the inning as Shelby Easton and Lowe each scored to give Union the 2-1 lead. Bluefield countered with a two-run homer in the top of the second to take 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs retook the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Carly Cain scored off an RBI double by McGinley, while McGinley would later score off an RBI double by Katie Fister. Union led 4-3 after two innings.

An RBI double by Harris scored McGinley in the fourth inning to give Union a 5-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Lowe tallied a solo homer. Later in the side, Kayla Keller reached first base on an error that scored Whisonant.

On the next at bat, Petrey stole home. A single by Merritt loaded the bases. McGinley reached first on an error, which scored Kayla Keller. Union scored five runs in the inning to take a 10-3 lead.

Bluefield tallied one run in the top of the sixth, but Lowe's second home run of the game and an RBI single by Kinsley Redmon that scored Whisonant gave Union a 12-4 win in six innings. Cain pitched the entire game for Union.

Lowe led all players in hits with three. Lowe is third in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) in batting average at .478. Lowe leads the conference in RBIs with 24, while being one of three players in the AAC to have a conference-leading six home runs.

 

The Bulldogs are now 8-8 (6-4 AAC) this season, while Bluefield is 3-11 (1-9 AAC). Up next for Union is a doubleheader at Georgetown on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
