The Bulldogs split doubleheader against St. Andrews

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College softball team fell in the first game 2-0, but won the second matchup 8-0 against St. Andrews on Friday. The Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game.

 

Game One:

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the second inning, Union had runners on first and third with two outs. The side ended with a strikeout on the ensuing at bat.

St. Andrews scored one run in the third inning to go with one in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs needed to score two runs to extend the game.

Kinsley Redmon reached first base on an error, but was tagged out at second base on the ensuing at bat via a fielder's choice. A fielder's choice on the next at bat tallied the second out. A ground out ended the matchup as Union fell short 2-0.

Kerry Dixon pitched the entire game for the Bulldogs. Dixon tallied two strikeouts, while allowing just three hits and one earned run.

 

Game Two:

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Redmon and Katie Fister each scored off wild pitches.

Shelby Easton was walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning, which allowed Redmon to score. Following a strikeout, Fister scored off a wild pitch. Sullivan would score off an obstruction error that gave an RBI single to Leea Cole.

On the ensuing at bat, an RBI single by Megan Merritt scored Easton. On the next at bat, Cole scored off an RBI single by Sarah Lowe. Following that, an RBI single by Taylor Whisonant scored Merritt. The following two at bats resulted in a pop up and a strikeout, but the Bulldogs tallied six runs in the inning.

Union won the matchup 8-0 in five innings. Lowe led all players in hits with three. Cole, Merritt, Whisonant, and Redmon each tallied one hit for the Bulldogs. Leea Cole was the winning pitcher. Cole pitched the entire game allowing just four hits and no runs.

 

Union is now 3-5 (1-1 AAC) this season, while St. Andrews is 5-17 (1-5 AAC). Up next for Union is a road conference doubleheader against Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 13, at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
