Union softball begins the 2024 season with two wins over Georgetown

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College softball team defeated Georgetown in both of Thursday's games. The Bulldogs won the first matchup 12-4 in five innings, while picking up an 8-5 win in the second game in five innings. With the victories, Union head coach Renee Hicks earned her 600th career win.

 

Game One:

In the bottom of the second inning, an RBI single by Megan McGinley scored Shelby Easton to tie the score 1-1. In the bottom of the third, pinch runner Ryleigh Petrey scored off an RBI single by Kinsley Redmon to give Union a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs had an impressive sixth inning as they scored six runs. The scoring began with a two-RBI double by Sarah Lowe, which scored Kayla Richardson and Leea Cole.

Lowe would score later in the side off a passed ball. An RBI double by Kinsley Redmon scored Taylor Whisonant. A two-RBI double by Kaley Harris scored McGinley and Redmon to give the Bulldogs an 8-1 lead.

Georgetown countered with three runs in the top of the fifth, but Union responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to win via mercy rule.

The scoring in the bottom of the fifth began with a two-RBI double by Shelby Easton that scored Katie Fister and Kayla Richardson. Easton scored off an RBI single by Redmon.

Redmon would score off an RBI double by McGinley. The Bulldogs won 12-4 in five innings. Megan Merritt was the winning pitcher for Union.

 

Game Two:

Union took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single by Redmon scored Kayla Sullivan. Later in the side, Whisonant recorded a two-RBI single that scored Merritt and Redmon.

Georgetown scored two unanswered runs to trim Union's lead, but the Bulldogs countered with a solo home run by Lowe in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Union trailed 5-4. The Bulldogs took a 6-5 lead when Lowe tallied a two-RBI double that scored Cole and Harris. Union extended its lead when Lowe scored off an RBI double by Merritt. Later in the side, Redmon scored off a walk with the bases loaded.

Union led 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning when the game was ended due to a lack of daylight. The Bulldogs won 8-5 in five innings. Carly Cain was the winning pitcher.

 

Union recorded 10 doubles in the series with Lowe and Merritt each registering two. Redmon led the team in hits with five, while Lowe and Merritt each tallied three. Redmon also led Union in runs scored with four, while Lowe followed with three.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 this season, while Georgetown is 0-2. Up next for Union is a doubleheader at Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, Feb. 17, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
