Softball falls short in two-game series at Johnson

Knoxville, Tenn. - The Union College softball team fell in short in Tuesday's doubleheader at Johnson University. The Bulldogs allowed just five runs in the series, but Johnson only gave up one.

Game One:

Union performed well defensively as pitcher Megan Merritt tallied four strikeouts, while only allowing one earned run in 6.0 innings pitched.

The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 entering the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Sarah Lowe reached first base via an error.

The next at bat resulted in a pop up for the second out of the side. Lowe was able to advance to second base via a passed ball during the ensuing at bat, but a pop up ended the matchup.

Union tallied two hits in the game as Johnson won 2-0 in seven innings.

Game Two:

The Bulldogs entered the top of the sixth inning trailing 3-0. With two outs and no runners on base, Leea Cole reached first via an error.

On the ensuing at bat, Megan McGinley registered a single that sent Cole to third base.

An RBI single by Selina Tavarez on the next at bat allowed Cole to score, but the side ended with an out at third base during the play.

The Bulldogs went into the seventh inning trailing by two runs. Union had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but a ground out ended the game.

Johnson won 3-1 in seven innings. Union's pitcher for this matchup was Elly Souther.

The Union Bulldogs are now 9-28 (8-18 AAC) this season, while Johnson is 21-11 (16-10 AAC).

Up next for the Bulldogs is their last series of the 2023 regular season. That doubleheader will be on Friday, April 21, at Truett McConnell.
