Union allows just five runs, but drops the doubleheader against KCU

The Union College softball team had a tough task on Tuesday. The Bulldogs hosted a Kentucky Christian team that entered the series with an 11-3 record in AAC play. Union only allowed five runs in the doubleheader, but the Knights won the series.

Game One:

KCU had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the second inning. Despite this, Union only allowed one run in the side.

Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the score was still 1-0 Kentucky Christian. Union had a runner on second base with no outs, but two strikeouts and a pop up ended the game. KCU won 1-0 in seven innings.

Of Union's three hits in the matchup, two of them were doubles. Those were hit by Whisonant and Sarah Lowe. Whisonant led the team in hits with two.

Megan Merritt was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs. Merritt recorded three strikeouts, while allowing just three hits in seven innings pitched.

Game Two:

Kentucky Christian scored a run in the top of the first inning, and added to its lead in the fourth inning with three additional runs.

Union's first run of the series occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning when Leea Cole scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 4-1. An RBI single by Taylor Whisonant with two outs allowed Cole to score, but the side ended on the next at bat. KCU won 4-2 in seven innings.

Union recorded seven hits in the matchup. Cole and Whisonant each registered two, which led the team. Both of Union's runs were scored by Cole.

Elly Souther was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs. Souther recorded eight strikeouts, while allowing just two earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Union is now 9-22 (8-14 AAC) this season, while Kentucky Christian is 22-14 (13-3 AAC). The Bulldogs play at Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, April 7, in a two-game series.
