Union falls short in doubleheader at Bryan

Dayton, Tenn. - The Union College softball team dropped both of today's games at Bryan. In the opening matchup, the Bulldogs led 4-3 in the middle of the fifth inning, but Bryan rallied for the win. In the second game, the Bulldogs registered two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but they needed three to extend the game.

Game One:

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 after two innings, but Union took the lead in the top of the third inning. With two runners in scoring position with just one out, Selina Tavarez tallied a two-RBI triple that scored Shelby Easton and Onnica Nichols.

On the ensuing at bat, Tavarez scored off a sacrifice fly by Taylor Whisonant. Union led 3-1 at the end of the side.

Bryan countered in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs to tie the game 3-3. The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fifth inning when Easton scored off an RBI double by Tavarez.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lady Lions registered five runs off five hits. Bryan tallied six hits and four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the matchup 12-4 in six innings.

Game Two:

The Bulldogs were unable to record a run for much of the second game. The score remained close despite this as Union pitcher Elly Souther registered seven strikeouts, while allowing just five hits.

Entering the top of the seventh inning, Union trailed 3-0. The Bulldogs had a runner on first base with two outs when Sarah Lowe hit a two-run homer, which trimmed the deficit to one.

A ground out on the next at bat ended the game. Bryan won the second matchup 3-2 in seven innings.

The Bulldogs are now 9-18 (8-10 AAC) this season, while Bryan is 10-18 (7-7 AAC).

Union's next doubleheader is scheduled to be at Point on Saturday, April 1. That series is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
