Softball falls to Brenau in two-game series

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College softball team hosted Brenau on Sunday, March 26, in a doubleheader at Union Field. The Bulldogs entered the series with a four-game winning streak, but Brenau swept the doubleheader.

Game One:

In the top of the first inning, the Golden Eagles had a runner on first base with two outs. Despite this, Brenau tallied seven runs in the top of the first inning.

The Golden Eagles led 8-0 in the middle of the second inning. Union's Ariel Dailey registered a double on the opening at bat of the bottom of the inning.

Later in the side, Kaylee Stuckey tallied a single that moved Dailey to third base with two outs. Stuckey stole second base during the next at bat, but a fly out ended the inning. Brenau won the opening matchup 8-0 in five innings.

Game Two:

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Union countered in the bottom of the inning when an RBI double by Taylor Whisonant scored Selina Tavarez.

The score remained 2-1 in favor Brenau until the fourth inning when the Golden Eagles recorded four runs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs' offense found much success. Union tallied three hits in the side, and recorded two runs when a two-RBI double by Megan Merritt scored Whisonant and Sarah Lowe.

Despite the Bulldogs' momentum, Brenau did not allow another run en route to a 6-3 win in seven innings.

The Bulldogs are now 9-16 (8-8 AAC) this season, while Brenau is 14-6 (10-4 AAC). Up next for Union is a doubleheader at Bryan on Tuesday, March 28, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
