Union softball picks up a doubleheader sweep on Senior Day against St. Andrews

Saturday's two-game series against St. Andrews featured Senior Day for the Union College softball team. The Bulldogs recorded 21 hits on the day, and swept the doubleheader.

Approximately 90 minutes before the opening game, Union recognized its seven seniors. (L to R) Summer Rains, Ariel Dailey, Selina Tavarez, Kaylee Stuckey, Onnica Nichols, Elly Souther, and Katy Redmon.

Game One:

Union trailed 2-1 in the middle of the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded with two outs. On the ensuing at bat, Nichols was walked. That tied the game 2-2.

On the next at bat, Shelby Easton recorded a grand slam homer to give Union a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs went on to score two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, an RBI single by Megan Merritt ended the game. Union won 10-2 in six innings.

Souther was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs. She recorded eight strikeouts, while allowing just three hits.

Game Two:

The Bulldogs led 2-1 after the first inning, but St. Andrews would re-take the lead in the third inning by scoring two runs. Union tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tori Turner scored off an RBI single by Taylor Whisonant.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs scored two runs to take a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning. Union entered the seventh inning with that two-run lead, but St. Andrews registered three runs.

The Bulldogs entered the bottom of the inning trailing 6-5. In a fitting end to Senior Day, it was a senior that recorded the game-winning hit. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Dailey tallied a two-RBI double that scored Stuckey and Sarah Lowe. Union won the game 7-6 in seven innings.

Union is now 9-14 (8-6 AAC) this season, while St. Andrews is 6-22 (1-13 AAC). The Bulldogs host Brenau on Sunday, March 26, in a two-game series that begins at noon.
