Union sweeps Bluefield in doubleheader

Barbourville, Ky. - The Union College softball team picked up two AAC wins on Tuesday as the Bulldogs swept Bluefield in a two-game series. Union won the opening matchup 4-2, and tallied a 4-1 win in the second game.

Game One:

The Bulldogs trailed 2-1 in the middle of the sixth inning. Union took the lead in the bottom of the inning as the Bulldogs tallied two runs via an error.

On the ensuing at bat, Selina Tavarez scored off a sacrifice fly by Sarah Lowe. Union did not allow a run in the seventh inning, and the Bulldogs won 4-2 in seven innings.

Megan Merritt was the winning pitcher for Union. Merritt recorded a career-high eight strikeouts. The last Union softball pitcher to register at least eight strikeouts was Abby Wall, who tallied eight against Columbia on March 5, 2022.

Game Two:

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. One of those runs was scored via a walk, while the other occurred due to a hit by pitch.

Union expanded its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when an RBI double by Lowe scored Taylor Whisonant.

The Bulldogs registered an additional run in the bottom of the sixth inning when an RBI single by Whisonant allowed Shelby Easton to score. Union won the matchup 4-1 in seven innings to earn its second AAC sweep of the season.

With the sweep, the Bulldogs are now 7-14 (6-6 AAC) this season, while Bluefield is 3-11 (1-5 AAC). Up next for Union is a home doubleheader against St. Andrews on Saturday beginning at noon. The Bulldogs' Senior Day festivities will take place at that two-game series.
