Softball team shut out in doubleheader against Midway

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union offense couldn't get into any kind of rhythm, as Midway escaped numerous jams and pulled away late in both games, topping the Bulldogs 8-0 and 11-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Union Field Wednesday.

GAME ONE

The Eagles blew things open by bringing home four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by RBI doubles by Katie Rhodes and Sidney Hudnall.

Trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning, Union had a chance to get back in the game, but left the bases loaded. The Bulldogs left eight runners on base in the shutout loss, which ended early after the Eagles, who finished the game with an 11-4 hitting edge, scored twice more in the sixth to make it a run-rule final.

GAME TWO

Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs had a great chance to answer back when the first two runners reached base, but it was all for naught, as the Eagles improbably ended the frame on a triple play.

After Taylor Whisonant lined out to left field, Kaylee Stuckey was thrown out at home after tagging up, then Eagle catcher Kyra McCall alertly got Kayla Richardson in a rundown, where she was eventually tagged for the final out.

Midway again had a big hit advantage (14-6) in game two and again blew things open late, turning a 4-0 game into another run-rule affair with a seven-run sixth inning.

NEXT UP FOR THE BULLDOGS

Union falls to 5-12 overall. The Bulldogs, who are 4-4 in conference play, return to AAC action on Friday where they travel to face league co-leader Reinhardt (6-0) for a doubleheader.

First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
