Union sweeps Columbia in softball doubleheader

Barbourville, Ky. - On Wednesday, the Union College softball team improved to 3-1 in conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Columbia. Union allowed a combined total of three runs throughout both games.

Game One:

Union trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs tied the game 1-1 when an RBI double by Sarah Lowe scored Ariel Dailey. Later in the side, Lowe scored off an RBI single by Maycee Limbaugh.

Union extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Leea Cole scored off an RBI single by Megan Merritt. Union held strong defensively, and the Bulldogs won the opening matchup 3-1 in seven innings.

Game Two:

Each team tallied two runs in the first inning of the second game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Union had two runners on base with one out. On the ensuing at bat, Selina Tavarez hit an RBI double that scored Taylor Whisonant and sent Summer Rains to third base.

On the next at bat, a sacrifice fly by Megan McGinley allowed Rains to score, while advancing Tavarez to third base. That was followed by an RBI single for Limbaugh that scored Tavarez. At the end of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs led by three runs.

Union continued its stellar defensive play throughout the remainder of the matchup, and the Bulldogs won the game 5-2 in seven innings.

The Union Bulldogs are now 4-7 (3-1 AAC) this season, while Columbia is 6-6 (0-4 AAC). The Bulldogs will host Milligan in a doubleheader on Saturday, which begins at 1:00 p.m.
