Softball falls short in doubleheader at Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. - The Union College softball team played in a doubleheader at Cumberland on Friday, Feb. 17. The Bulldogs fell short in each matchup as Cumberland swept the doubleheader.

Game One

Union tallied one run in the top of the first inning when Katy Redmon scored off an RBI single by Megan Merritt. Cumberland responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go along with one run in the second inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Bulldogs had a runner on second base with two outs. Redmon tallied a single on the ensuing at bat, and Kaylee Stuckey scored off a throwing error by Cumberland. Union trailed 3-2 in the middle of the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, Union had a runner on third base with two outs. Merritt scored on the next at bat when Taylor Whisonant reached first base off a fielding error. The side ended on the following at bat.

With the score tied entering the bottom of the inning, Cumberland scored one run to take a one-run lead. Union was unable to score in the top of the seventh inning, which resulted in a 4-3 win for Cumberland in seven innings.

Game Two

Union trailed 6-0 after the opening inning, but the Lady Bulldogs countered with some offense of their own in the top of the second inning. Union had the bases loaded with one out when Shelby Easton hit an RBI single that allowed Merritt to score.

Summer Rains and Sarah Lowe each scored for Union in the next bat. That was followed by an RBI ground out by Stuckey that allowed Easton to score. Megan McGinley tallied an rbi single on the following at bat as Selina Tavarez scored.

The side ended on the next at bat. The Lady Bulldogs recorded five runs in the top of the second inning, but still trailed 6-5. Cumberland went on to score an additional 14 runs en route to winning the game 20-5 in five innings.

The Union College Lady Bulldogs are now 1-5, while Cumberland is 3-1. Union was originally scheduled to host Pikeville in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 18, but that series has been postponed.
