Softball drops two one-run games to open season

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College softball team began its 2023 regular season on Friday with a pair of tight losses in a doubleheader against Thomas More University, as the Saints rallied in the seventh inning of both games, winning 14-13 and 4-3 respectively.

GAME ONE

In the bottom of the first inning, Union took a 4-3 lead when senior Ariel Dailey hit a three-run home run.

Thomas More responded with four runs in the top of the second inning, but the Lady Bulldogs countered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Lowe's three-run home run gave Union an 8-7 lead going into the third inning. Both Dailey and Lowe finished the opener with four RBIs.

The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Thomas More tallied five runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Union responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth inning and two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The score was tied 12-12 at the end of the sixth inning.

The Saints scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 14-12 lead. Selina Tavarez began the bottom of the inning with a double to centerfield for Union. Tavarez would score three at bats later off an RBI single by Megan Merritt.

The game ended with back-to-back fly outs as Union left the tying run on first base.

GAME TWO

In the second matchup of the day, Union tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when an RBI single by Maycee Limbaugh allowed Dailey to score.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lowe hit her second home run of the doubleheader. The score was 2-1 Union going into the fifth inning.

Thomas More took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady Bulldogs countered with a run of their own when Dailey scored off an RBI double by Merritt in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Saints took a 4-3 lead. Union was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, which gave Thomas More the win.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 0-2 (0-0 AAC) this season, while Thomas More is 2-0 (0-0 AAC).

Union's next doubleheader will be at Georgetown College on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The opening matchup of that series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
