BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union College softball ran into some stiff competition on Monday as it dropped an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader to visiting Tennessee Wesleyan.
The opener lasted only five innings as Tennessee Wesleyan won 8-0. Union tried to fight back in the finale but fell 7-3.
The losses put Union at 13-17 overall and 10-8 in the AAC, while Tennessee Wesleyan improves to 26-3 overall and 18-2 in conference play.
GAME 1 – TENNESSEE WESLEYAN 8, UNION 0 (5 INNINGS)
Tennessee Wesleyan seized control of the game early, scoring five runs in the first. The visitors lined six hits and took advantage of one walk in building the 5-0 lead.
Tennessee Wesleyan went on to add a run in the second and two more in the third for an 8-0 advantage.
Union was limited to one hit, a Leea Cole single in the fourth.
GAME 2 – TENNESSEE WESLEYAN 7, UNION 3
Tennessee Wesleyan grabbed the early once again, scoring twice for a 2-0 advantage.
Union cut the deficit in half in the second when Sarah Lowe belted her sixth home run of the season. However, Allee West lofted a two-run homer in the fourth to extend Tennessee Wesleyan's lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Union loaded the bases with one out and scored on Paige Oldham's sac fly to make it 4-2.
The theme continued in the fifth when Tennessee Wesleyan scored two more runs while Union pushed only one across. The visitors tacked on a run in the seventh to seal the 7-3 victory.
Cole and Lowe both went 2-for-3 with a run scored with Lowe also driving in one run. Cole also stole three bases in the game.
BULLDOG NOTES
- After being out for two-plus weeks due to injury, Cole made a strong return as she went 3-for-5 with four stolen bases on the day.
- Lowe has 12 home runs in her Union career.
- Lowe leads the team with 22 RBI.
- Oldham recorded five more strikeouts to give her 72 on the year. She is three away from tying her career-high which she set last season.

Union is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Reinhardt (Ga.) in AAC play. Due to the forecast of potential storms later in the day, first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
