No. 3 TWU hands men's tennis first AAC defeat
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The depth of third-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan was too much for Union to overcome, as the Bulldog men's tennis team suffered its first Appalachian Athletic Conference loss of the season by the count of 7-0 Sunday.
Playing against a TWU squad more than two years removed from its last AAC loss, Union looked primed to compete early and nearly stole the doubles point.
Santiago Diaz-Lopez and Harry Jordan earned UC a 6-3 win at No. 3. Luke Geduldt and Sebastiano Zorzi then took Wesleyan's No. 1 team of Nicholas Cortes and Octavio Volpi all the way to a tie-break, but couldn't close the deal, losing 7-6.
Tennessee Wesleyan had an easier time in singles play, winning five of six matches in straight sets. Victor Lopes had the best showing for Union, winning the first set 6-1 before falling 6-3, 6-2 in the final two against Zoilo Rios at No. 3.
Wesleyan and Reinhardt are now tied atop the league standings at 8-0 with Union one match back (4-1) in the loss column.
Union travels to face 14th-ranked Reinhardt at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
