Union defeats Georgetown 2-0 in the Bulldogs’ 2023 home opener

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College men's soccer team picked up a win on Wednesday night in its first home game of the 2023 regular season. The Bulldogs defeated Georgetown 2-0.

Union's first goal of the game, which occurred early in the opening half, was headed in by Callum Longworth for his first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Biel Vallverdu.

Later in the half, the same duo connected for another goal. This time, it was scored by Vallverdu as Longworth had the assist. It marked Vallverdu's second goal of the season. A scoreless second half resulted in a final score of 2-0 in favor of Union.

"We started the game in both halves extremely well, but in the second half we should have scored a couple more," Union head coach Jonathan Shaw said. "Unfortunately, we started playing below our potential. Hopefully, we will learn from this and raise our level for the next two non-conference games; and play at the standard we expect for 90 minutes. Even though we weren't at our best, it's very positive that we were able to grind out a win."

The Bulldogs are now 2-0, while Georgetown is 2-1. Union's next game is slated for Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4:00 p.m. on the road against Midway.
