Chaney, Messer both medal at Boone Trace

RICHMOND, Ky. - Despite having little representation, the Union College golf team had a dominant presence atop the scoreboard at the two-day Invitational at Boone Trace.

Kedric Chaney and Whitney Messer both earned medalist honors for the Bulldogs, shooting 144 and 157 in their respective tournaments.

Chaney entered the day in a three-way tie for first place and staved off Indiana Tech's Spencer Keller by one stroke, shooting a two-under par 71 in Tuesday's final round, the best round of any individual at the tournament.

Already off to a strong start this spring, Tuesday's win was a major breakthrough for both Chaney and the men's program. Union's last medalist performance came on Sept. 8, 2019, when Declan Riddle was victorious at the Bill Sergent Invitational.

Though the wait wasn't as long on the women's side, Messer win also ended a prolonged medalist drought on Tuesday when she was by far the top player on the course.

Three shots off the lead after round one, Messer's second-day 75 was four shots better than anyone else in the field and resulted in her finishing a comfortable six strokes ahead of Georgetown's Katherine Wesley, the invite's runner-up.

This was the first individual win for the Union women since Messer's own medalist finish at the Tennessee Wesleyan Spring Invitational on April 6, 2021.

The wins give Messer and Chaney great momentum heading into the postseason. The Bulldog women will return to action at the AAC Spring Invitational on April 17 and 18, with the men's tournament taking place on the 24th and 25th.
