Bio

  • John Luttrell was named the 13th head coach of Union College football in January of 2020.
  • He has produced one offensive freshman of the year, one defensive freshman of the year, and four All-MSC Appalachian Division second-team members.
  • Prior to becoming the head coach, he served one season on the Bulldog coaching staff as the offensive line coach.
  • Luttrell has previously coached at the collegiate level at Union College and Murray State University. He has also served as head coach at Cawood High School and Harlan High School, going 34-52 with seven playoff appearances.
  • He graduated cum laude from Union College in 1988, where he played football and earned All-American honors. He was inducted into the Union College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
  • Luttrell spent 25 years as an infantry officer with assignments that included leading soldiers in three different combat operations; Operation Just Cause (Panama), Operation Desert Shield/Storm (Iraq) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq).
  • Luttrell is a graduate of Harlan High School where he participated in both basketball and football. He still resides in Harlan, Ky., where he is a Master Mason and an Elder of the Harlan Christian Church. He is married to Tracie Morris Luttrell of Harlan, Ky., and has three sons: Justin, Hunter, and Michael, five grandsons and one granddaughter. He is the son of Gurney Luttrell Sr. (deceased) and Carolyn Luttrell.
  • Was voted Co-Chairman of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Football Coaches.
