The Bulldogs fall short at No. 21 Reinhardt

Waleska, Ga. – The Union College football team played at No. 21 Reinhardt on Saturday, Oct. 29, in a conference matchup.

Union recovered the opening kickoff at Reinhardt's 35-yard line. The Bulldogs started the drive with an eight-yard pass from Walker Russell to Tony Norman, which was followed by an 11-yard pass from Russell to Chris Thomas.

The drive concluded with a 33-yard field goal by Dustin Brown to give Union a 3-0 lead with 12:11 to play in the first quarter.

Reinhardt responded by scoring two touchdowns to hold a 14-3 lead with 2:19 to play in the first quarter. On the ensuing possession, a 12-yard run by Taji Jackson put Union into Reinhardt territory.

On 3rd and 13 from the Eagles' 38-yard line, Russell connected with Isaiah Johnson for 11 yards. On 4th and 2, Russell found Thomas for a gain of five. On 3rd and 9 at Reinhardt's 21-yard line, Russell found Thomas for a gain of 17 yards.

On second and goal, a play action pass resulted in a four-yard touchdown from Russell to Justin Barker. The score was 14-10 Reinhardt with 12:43 remaining in the second quarter. The drive covered 76 yards in 12 plays. The Eagles would extend their lead as Reinhardt led 31-10 at halftime.

The Bulldogs' offense got inside the Reinhardt 25-yard line three times in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles defense prevented points. The final score was 45-10 Reinhardt.

Each team recorded 21 first downs. Union ran 76 plays, while the Eagles tallied 54. The Bulldogs registered 32:06 time of possession. The Bulldogs recorded seven TFLs, while Reinhardt registered three.

Russell was 24-of-48 for 163 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Defensively, Samuel Hawthorne recorded eight total tackles, which was tied for the most total tackles for either team. Noah Steen recorded seven total tackles for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs are now 3-5 (2-2 AAC) this season, while Reinhardt is 6-2 (4-0 AAC). Up next for Union is a road conference game at Bluefield on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 6:00 p.m.
