Union falls short 10-7 against Cumberlands

Barbourville, Ky. – The 2023 edition of the Battle for the Brass Lantern took place on Saturday night at Williamson Stadium.

Union scored on its first possession of the game. The five-play, 48-yard drive was capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Bryson Grabowski to Chris Thomas. The Bulldogs led 7-0 with 8:59 to play in the first quarter.

With the Bulldogs still leading by a touchdown with 5:12 to play in the opening half, a lightning delay halted play for approximately three hours and 20 minutes.

Cumberlands scored its first points of the game following the delay via a field goal with three seconds remaining in the first half.

The Patriots' other scoring play occurred in the third quarter with a with a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Bulldogs fell by a final score of 10-7.

Offensively, Union registered 207 rushing yards in the game to go along with 131 passing yards. Defensively, the Bulldogs played well as Cumberlands' offense only registered three points.

Union is now 1-2, while the Patriots are 3-0. Up next for the Bulldogs is an away game against Campbellsville on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2:01 p.m.
