UCU baseball falls to Truett McConnell in doubleheader on Senior Day

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team hosted Truett McConnell on Saturday in a doubleheader. The matchup featured Senior Day for the Bulldogs.

Union recognized Ernesto Moreno, Gunnar Kale, Nathan Van Beek, Logan Romasanta, Brendan Hillis, Christian McCollough, Jackson Clark, Cooper Tomkinson, Aaron Barrera, Grayson Makranyi, Raebert De Los Santos, Nick Seelman, Dylan Hetzler, Jonathan Miles, and Ethan Warren prior to the start of the doubleheader.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs fell 5-4 in nine innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Jayden Gonzalez reached first on an error that allowed Max Charlton to score. Union trailed by one run with two runners on base and two outs, but a fly out concluded the game.

Gunnar Kale and Charlton each tallied two hits, which was tied with three other players for the most in the matchup. Charlton scored two runs, which led all players. Charlton registered a triple in the game, while Kale and Barrera each tallied a double.

Ethan Warren pitched the entire game for UCU. Warren allowed three earned runs and 11 hits in 9.0 innings pitched, while registering four strikeouts.

 

Game Two:

The matchup was scheduled for seven innings, but went into extra innings. Truett McConnell scored two runs in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs fell 4-2 in nine innings.

Brysen Vernon led all players with three hits, while Gonzalez and Cooper Tomkinson each totaled two.

Evan Hiatt was the starting pitcher for UCU. Dalton Kottmer, Christian McCollough, and Dylan Hetzler also pitched for Union. Collectively, the Bulldogs allowed nine hits, seven walked batters, and three earned runs. Union registered seven strikeouts.

 

The Bulldogs are now 8-22 (1-13 AAC this season), while Truett McConnell is 10-19 (7-11 AAC). Up next for Union is a home game against No. 9 Cumberlands on Tuesday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m.
