Barbourville, Ky. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team faced off against Cleary in a doubleheader on Friday to kick off a four-game series. The Bulldogs secured a 6-4 victory in the opener but fell short in the second game 21-13.
Game One
Aaron Barrera, Nick Seelman, and Hunter Pinkston each went 1-for-2 in the matchup. Seelman drove in two runs, while Pinkston tallied an RBI and a run scored, highlighted by a home run.
Jayden Gonzalez and Brysen Vernon also contributed at the plate with one hit each. Gonzalez recorded an RBI, while Vernon drove in two runs. Isaiah Pintor, Gonzalez, Jonathan Miles, Brendan Hillis, and Vernon all crossed the plate for a run. Vernon added to his performance with a double.
Gonzalez, Miles, and Hillis each stole a base during the game.
Logan Romasanta got the start and earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, while Dalton Kottmer also saw action in relief. Romasanta recorded four strikeouts, while Kottmer added two of his own.
Game Two
Pintor and Seelman both went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Vernon and Raebert De Los Santos each recorded a 2-for-4 performance. Vernon and Santos also had four RBIs apiece.
Pintor, Santos, and Seelman each crossed the plate twice, while Seelman hit two doubles and Vernon added one of his own.
Gunnar Kale, Hillis, Ryan Brown, Gonzalez, and Pinkston each tallied a hit. Brown and Gonzalez both drove in a run, while Tucker Allen scored three times. Kale added two runs of his own, with Brown and Pinkston each touching home once.
On the basepaths, Pintor, Vernon, and Seelman each stole a base.
Eli Sizemore got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs, with Christian McCollough, Tanner Hayes, Nathan Van Beek, and Braylon Greene all contributing in relief. Van Beek led the pitching staff with three strikeouts, while McCollough and Greene fanned two each. Sizemore and Hayes each added one strikeout.
The Bulldogs are now 6-9 this season, while Cleary is 5-5. Up next for Union is the final two games of the series against Cleary on Saturday, Mar. 1, at 12:00 p.m.
