Union baseball falls in doubleheader against Shawnee State

Winchester, Ky. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team wrapped up games three and four of their four-game series against Shawnee State. After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, the Bulldogs fell in both matchups on Sunday.


Game One:

The Bulldogs came up short in a 14-5 loss after seven innings of play. They scored two runs in the first, added another in the fifth, and plated two more in the seventh. 

Aaron Barrera went 2-for-2 at the plate, leading the offense. Isaiah Pintor also went two-for-four. Ernesto Moreno, Brendan Hillis, Brysen Vernon, Tucker Allen, Cooper Tomkinson, and Jayden Gonzalez each contributed a hit. Vernon drove in two runs, while Allen, Gonzalez, and Barrera each tallied an RBI.

UCU's pitching rotation was led by starting pitcher Logan Romasanta, followed by Christian McCollough, Eli Sizemore, and Nathan Van Beek. Romasanta, McCollough, and Sizemore each recorded two strikeouts, while Van Beek added one.

Game Two:

UCU came up short 4-0 in seven innings. Pintor, Tomkinson, and Brown each tallied a hit for the Bulldogs. 

Cameron Schuster got the start on the mound in game two, while  Dylan Hetzler took over in relief. Schuster worked four innings, striking out five, while Hetzler closed out the final three frames with four strikeouts of his own.

 

The Bulldogs are now 1-3 this season, while Shawnee State is 3-1. Up next for Union is a doubleheader against UC Clermont on Saturday, Feb. 8, at noon.
