No. 10 Union falls to No. 6 Montreat in AAC Tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. – The No. 10 Union Commonwealth University baseball team fell short 9-8 on Friday against No. 6 Montreat in the AAC Tournament. With the defeat, the Bulldogs were eliminated from the tournament. Union won the AAC Tournament last season.

No. 10 Union defeated No. 7 Johnson on Tuesday, while falling to No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday and winning 15-3 in seven innings over No. 3 Pikeville on Thursday.

Against Montreat, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Colton Stegman scored off an RBI single by Logan Romasanta. In the second, Union would extend its lead. A sacrifice fly RBI by Stegman scored Sammy Serrano.

On the next at bat, an RBI single by Sebastian Flores scored Luke Pell. Seth Keener's unearned run gave Union a 4-0 lead after the top of the second inning. Montreat would respond, but Union held a 4-3 lead after four innings.

In the top of the fifth inning, Romasanta would score off an RBI double by Kelley, who advanced to third on an error. Later in the side, Kelley scored off an RBI single by Ernesto Moreno. The Bulldogs led 6-3 after the top of the fifth inning.

Going into the ninth inning, Union led 6-5. In the top of the ninth, Nathan McCabe and Kelley each scored off a two-RBI triple by Moreno. Despite the 8-5 lead, Union fell short 9-8 in nine innings.

Hunter Rossi, Carlos Soto, and Grayson Makranyi each pitched for Union. Moreno tallied three hits and three RBIs, which each led the team. The Bulldogs are now 20-29 this season, while Montreat is 28-24-1.
