Union hits five home runs in one game, but fall in doubleheader to No. 17 Tennessee Wesleyan

Athens, Tenn. – On Friday, the Union Commonwealth University baseball team played the final games of its conference series against No. 17 Tennessee Wesleyan.

  

Game One

Tennessee Wesleyan took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In the next inning, Mason Kelley got hit by a pitch and Nathan McCabe was walked on the next bat.

On the ensuing at bat, Logan Romasanta's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. On the next at-bat, Tyler Bean hit an RBI single that scored Kelley.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings when Tennessee Wesleyan tallied eight more runs to widen the advantage to 12-1.

In the sixth inning, Sammy Serrano singled and advanced into scoring position later in the side, but the Bulldogs were unable to score. Tennessee Wesleyan added three runs in its turn at bat. The game ended after seven innings with Tennessee Wesleyan winning 15-1 in seven innings.

Carter Finlay pitched 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, while Grayson Makranyi pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Nathan Van Beek recorded one strikeout in his inning pitched, while Zach Moore pitched in 1.1 innings. Bean, Serrano, and Jackson Holcombe each recorded one hit.

 

 

Game Two:

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Tennessee Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan added two more runs in the next inning to make the score 4-0.

In the fourth, Tennessee Wesleyan scored again with a solo home run. In the top of the fifth, Bean singled with one out before Moreno hit a two-run home run. That was followed by Serrano's solo home run that brought the score to 5-3.

In the top of the sixth with two outs, Kelley and Nathan McCabe hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game at 5-5. Following Bean being walked, Moreno hit an RBI triple that scored Bean to give Union a 6-5 lead.

Tennessee Wesleyan hit another solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tying the game again at 6-6.

In the final inning, Trey Hollon's solo home run put the Union ahead 7-6. Tennessee Wesleyan answered with a walk-off two-run homer to secure an 8-7 win in seven innings and a 3-0 sweep of the series.

Hunter Rossi pitched in five innings, while recording two strikeouts. Carlos Soto pitched in one inning. Offensively, Moreno went two-for-three with three RBIs. Union hit five homers in the matchup.

 

Union is now 18-27 (11-19 AAC) this season, while No. 17 Tennessee Wesleyan is 33-15 (23-7 AAC).
