Seelman goes three-for-three as Union wins final game of conference series

Barbourville, Ky. - On Sunday, the Union Commonwealth University baseball team played game three of its three-game conference series against Pikeville.

The Bulldogs wasted no time seizing an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning. On the opening at bat, Colton Stegman tallied a single. Stegman would advance to second on a passed ball.

Sammy Serrano then executed a sacrifice bunt to push Stegman to third. Luke Pell registered an RBI groundout on the next at bat, which scored Stegman.

The Bears quickly countered in the top of the third inning by leveling the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Seelman's sacrifice fly brought home Logan Romasanta to give Union a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs continued to build momentum in the fifth and sixth innings. Serrano crossed the plate in the fifth courtesy of a ground out RBI by Romasanta.

In the sixth, Union unleashed a flurry of offense. Mason Kelley doubled on the opening at bat, while Seelman singled on the next at bat as Kelley advanced to third.

Ernesto Moreno contributed with a sacrifice fly to bring Kelley home. Seelman's stolen base put him in prime scoring position, while Trey Hollon's single advanced him to third. Jonathan Miles entered the game as a pinch runner for Hollon.

Stegman then brought Seelman home with a sacrifice fly before Serrano added an RBI single, which extended Union's lead to 6-1.

Despite an effort from the Bears in the top of the seventh that narrowed the deficit to 6-3, the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning. Seelman's two-RBI single drove in Tyler Bean and Romasanta, which widened Union's lead to 8-3.

Pikeville notched one run in the top of the ninth, but the Bulldogs emerged victorious 8-4 in nine innings. Despite the win, Union ultimately fell short in the series 2-1.

Hunter Rossi pitched seven innings, while collecting the win from today's game. He recorded two strikeouts, while improving his record to 5-3.

Carlos Soto pitched in one inning. He collected one strikeout, while allowing zero hits. Grayson Makranyi also pitched in one inning, and allowed only one hit.

Offensively, Nick Seelman went three-for-three with three RBIs and one run scored. Stegman, Serrano, Bean, and Kelley went two-for-four.

The Bulldogs are now 18-24 (11-16 AAC) this season, while Pikeville is 29-16 (20-9 AAC). Up next for Union is its final road conference series of the season, which will be against No. 20 Tennessee Wesleyan. The first game of that series is slated for Thursday, April 25, at 2:00 p.m.
