Union collects 13 hits, but drops doubleheader to Pikeville

Barbourville, Ky. - On Saturday, the Union Commonwealth University baseball team played games one and two of its three-game conference series against Pikeville.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs seized an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning, which was ignited by Colton Stegman's leadoff single. He then stole second.

Stegman advanced to third on a groundout. Luke Pell then delivered an RBI double that scored Stegman and sent the Bulldogs into an early lead.

The Bears promptly retaliated in the top of the second inning to knot the score at 1-1. Their rally continued in the third inning by notching three additional runs to take a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Stegman capitalized on an error to reach second base before advancing to third on a fly ball.

Logan Romasanta's bunt resulted in an RBI single, which scored Stegman and narrowed the deficit to 4-2. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs ultimately fell short 4-2 in nine innings.

Zach Moore, Dalton Kottmer, and Ethan Warren each pitched in game one. Kottmer recorded four strikeouts, while Moore and Warren collected one each.

Offensively, Sammy Serrano led the way going two-for-four. Stegman also went two-for-five with two runs scored.

 

Game Two:

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning. It was then that the Bears seized the initiative by notching one run. They followed up with another in the top of the fifth to assert a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Romasanta delivered an RBI single that scored Seth Keener, which ignited a rally for the Bulldogs. Later in the side, Nick Seelman delivered an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2.

The score remained 2-2 entering the top of the ninth inning. It was there that the Bears scored two runs to surge ahead 4-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Romasanta tallied a single. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs fell 4-2 in seven innings. 

Carter Finlay, Christian McCollough, and Dylan Hetzler each pitched for Union. McCollough collected four strikeouts, while Finlay registered three and Hetzler had one. Offensively, Romasanta went two-for-four with an RBI.

 

The Bulldogs are now 17-24 (10-16 AAC) this season, while Pikeville is 27-15 (18-8 AAC). Up next for Union is the remainder of this conference series against Pikeville. The final game of the series is slated for Sunday, April 21, at 12:00 p.m.
