Union falls to Montreat in conference series

Montreat, N.C. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team played the final two games of its three-game conference series at Montreat on Saturday.

 

Game One:

In the top of the first inning with two outs, Logan Romasanta recorded a single to right field. A fielder's choice retired the side.

Montreat swiftly gained momentum in the bottom of the second by securing an early 3-0 lead. Although Colton Stegman managed a single in the top of the third, the Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on the scoring chance.

Luke Pell connected on a single in the top of the fourth, but Montreat would once again prevent Union from scoring. Montreat would continue to widen the gap as it led 11-0 after the bottom of the sixth inning.

A single was hit by Pell with two outs in the top of the seventh. McCabe followed with a double, but a ground out ended the game. Montreat won 11-0 in seven innings.

Hunter Rossi and Dalton Kottmer each pitched for the Bulldogs. Rossi collected three strikeouts, while Kottmer had one. Pell led the way offensively going two-for-three.

 

Game Two:

Montreat surged ahead with a swift 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the matchup. In the top of the third, Diego Clariot recorded a single with one out, but the Bulldogs couldn't convert the opportunity into runs.

Another run was added to Montreat's tally in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, Mason Kelley recorded a single, but Montreat held the Bulldogs scoreless.

Montreat would extend its lead in bottom of the inning as the Cavaliers scored six runs to take a 9-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Union's Tyler Bean registered a solo home run to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Following Bean's momentum, Trey Hollon added a double to center field. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs could only muster one run in this inning.

In the top of the seventh, Union pinch-hitter Jacob Torres recorded a single. The Cavaliers won 13-1 in seven innings. The Bulldogs fell 3-0 in the series against Montreat.

Carter Finlay, Zach Moore, Dylan Hetzler, and Evan Hiatt each made an appearance on the mound. Finlay collected two strikeouts. Moore, Hetzler, and Hiatt each had one strikeout. Clariot, Kelley, Bean, and Hollon all went one-for-two, while Torres went one-for-one.

 

The Bulldogs are now 17-21 (10-14 AAC) this season, while Montreat is 23-19-1 (13-10 AAC). Up next for Union is an away game against Northern Kentucky University. That matchup is set for Tuesday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m.
