Union baseball splits doubleheader against Kentucky Christian on Senior Day

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Kentucky Christian on Senior Day for the Bulldogs.

Union fell 18-9 in the first game, but won 5-0 in the second matchup of the day. Including the Bulldogs' 9-2 win on Friday, Union won the series 2-1.

 

Game One:

KCU led 5-0 entering the bottom of the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs tallied four runs. With two runners on base, Nick Seelman reached first off an error, while Luke Pell scored.

Following Tyler Bean getting hit by a pitch, a sacrifice fly by Jackson Holcombe scored Nathan McCabe. Later in the side, Seelman scored on a passed ball. Union tallied one more run in the side as Bean would score off an RBI single by Mason Kelley.

KCU scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take an 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning, McCabe recorded a solo home run in the opening at bat. Later in the side, Bean would score off an RBI ground out by Colton Stegman.

Kentucky Christian tallied one run in the fourth inning, but Union scored one in the fifth when Seelman scored off an RBI double by Holcombe.

KCU entered the bottom of the seventh inning with an 11-7 lead. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit when Bean scored off a sacrifice fly by Sammy Serrano.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, an RBI single by McCabe scored Kelley. KCU registered seven runs in the ninth inning en route to an 18-9 win in nine innings.

Carter Finlay, Zach Moore, Dalton Kottmer, Jackson Clark, and Braylon Greene each pitched in the matchup for Union. McCabe led Union in hits with three.

 

Game Two:

In the bottom of the second inning, an RBI single by Logan Romasanta scored Bean to give Union a 1-0 lead. Later in the side, Romasanta scored off an RBI double by Seelman.

The next runs in the matchup were registered in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jacob Torres scored off an RBI double by Stegman. On the next at bat, an RBI double by Pell scored Stegman. Later in the side, a sacrifice fly by McCabe scored Pell.

Union won 5-0 in seven innings. Hunter Rossi was the winning pitcher. He pitched the entire game for the Bulldogs. Rossi tallied four strikeouts, while walking one batter and allowing three hits.

 

The Bulldogs are now 17-18 (10-11 AAC) this season, while KCU is 15-22 (2-19 AAC). Up next for Union is a home game against Midway on Tuesday, April 9, at 3:00 p.m.
