The Bulldogs win first game in series against KCU

Barbourville, Ky. – On Friday, the Union Commonwealth University baseball team played against Kentucky Christian in the first matchup of its three-game conference series. The Bulldogs won 9-2.

The Knights swiftly secured an early 1-0 advantage in the opening inning, but Union would tie the game in the fifth inning.

Mason Kelley ignited the inning with a double to center field. Luke Pell then executed a sacrifice bunt to advance Kelley to third. Sammy Serrano followed with an RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.

Kentucky Christian countered in the top of the ensuing inning by notching another run to go ahead 2-1. The momentum swung in Union's favor in the bottom of the sixth.

Colton Stegman tallied a single with one out, which was followed by Sebastian Flores' RBI triple that scored Stegman.

Logan Romasanta continued the onslaught with an RBI single that plated Avery Worde, who was running for Flores. A walk to Kelley loaded the bases, which allowed Luke Pell to deliver a two-RBI double that propelled Union into a 5-2 lead.

The Bulldogs further solidified their lead in the bottom of the seventh by adding three more runs to their tally.

Stegman capitalized on a passed ball to score, while Romasanta's RBI single scored Nathan Aldaz. Romasanta himself crossed the plate on an error to extend Union's lead to 8-2.

Union scored once more in the bottom of the eighth when Serrano stole home. The Bulldogs won 9-2 in nine innings.

Carlos Soto, Ethan Warren, Grayson Makranyi, and Evan Hiatt each pitched in today's game. Soto and Warren collected three strikeouts each. Makranyi and Hiatt had two strikeouts each, while giving up zero hits in their innings pitched.

Offensively, Stegman, Romasanta, Kelley, Pell, and Serrano all collected two hits today. Pell and Romasanat each had two RBIs.

 

The Bulldogs are now 16-17 (9-10 AAC) this season, while Kentucky Christian is 14-21 (1-18 AAC). Up next for Union is the remainder of this conference series against Kentucky Christian. The second game of the series is slated for Saturday, April 6, at 12:00 p.m., while the final matchup is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
