Union wins series against Truett McConnell

Cleveland, Ga. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team played game three of its three-game series against Truett McConnell on Sunday. The Bulldogs won the matchup 7-6 to win the series 2-1.

In the top of the first inning, Ernesto Moreno led things off with a single to left field. Moreno would advance to second amidst a defensive error. On the next at bat, Colton Stegman reached first off an error as Moreno advanced to third.

On the ensuing at bat, Sebastian Flores hit a three-run home run that propelled Union to an early 3-0 advantage. Truett managed to notch a run in response to narrow the margin to 3-1.

As the game progressed, the Bears clawed back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Nick Seelman delivered a solo homer in the ensuing inning to nudge Union ahead 4-3. Truett McConnell responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring one run to tie the score 4-4

The momentum swayed again in the top of the fourth when Logan Romasanta sparked a rally with a leadoff single. He advanced to third on a passed ball before Aaron Barrera's groundout scored him to put Union ahead 5-4.

Truett McConnell countered by seizing the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Union rallied in the top of the sixth.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Romasanta hit an RBI single to score Sammy Serrano. A pitch then hit Mason Kelley to score Moreno, which gave Union a 7-6 lead.

No runs were scored throughout the remainder of the game as Union secured a 7-6 victory over Truett McConnell. Hunter Rossi and Zach Moore both appeared on the mound for the Bulldogs. Rossi had four strikeouts, while Moore had two. Moore gave up only one hit in his four innings pitched.

Offensively, Romasanta went three-for-five with one run scored and one RBI. Seelman went three-for-four with one run scored. Serrano also went two-for-three, scoring one run.

 

Union is now 14-15 (7-8 AAC) this season, while Truett McConnell is 13-17 (6-11 AAC). Up next for the Bulldogs is a home conference game against Bluefield on Friday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m.
