Union splits conference doubleheader with Truett McConnell

Cleveland, Ga. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team played games one and two of a three-game conference series against Truett McConnell on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the first game 10-7 and lost the second game 5-4.

 

Game One: 

In the top of the second inning, Mason Kelley ignited the Bulldogs' offense with a single, which was followed by Aaron Barrera drawing a walk.

Following a fly out, Sammy Serrano reached first on an error to score Kelley and advance Barrera to second. The Bulldogs led 1-0.

The momentum continued in the top of the third as Nick Seelman led off with a single. Colton Stegman was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. Logan Romasanta followed with an RBI single, which brought Seelman home and advanced Stegman to second base.

With the bases loaded after Sebastian Flores drew a walk, Tyler Bean delivered a grand slam that propelled Union to a 6-0 lead.

Truett followed by scoring a run, but Union held a 6-1 advantage heading into the fourth inning. Ernesto Moreno was hit by a pitch in the first at bat of the fourth inning. On the next at bat, Stegman hit a two-run homer to give Union an 8-1 lead.

The Bears would narrow the gap as Union led 8-6 entering the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, Flores sealed Union's victory with a powerful two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 10-6 lead.

Truett managed to score one run in its final effort, but it wasn't enough to overcome Union's lead. The Bulldogs won 10-7.

Ethan Warren, Dylan Hetzler, and Dalton Kottmer all made an appearance on the mound. Warren collected four strikeouts, while Hetzler had two.

 

Game Two:

Kelley ignited the Bulldogs' offense with a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give Union a 1-0 lead.

 In the top of the third, Seth Keener was walked on the opening at bat. He later stole second base. Later in the side, Romasanta delivered an RBI double that scored Keener.

Romasanta took advantage of an error later in the side to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0. Truett managed to trim the lead with a total of two runs scored in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings that narrowed the gap to 3-2.

The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fifth as Keener once again sparked the offense with a single. Stegman followed suit with a single that advanced Keener to third base.

Capitalizing on a Truett error, Romasanta reached first base, while Keener crossed home plate to extend Union's lead to 4-2. Truett came back in the final half inning scoring three runs to win 5-4.

Carter Finlay, Grayson Makranyi, and Carlos Soto made an appearance on the mound for the Bulldogs. Finlay threw one strikeout, while Makranyi threw two.

 

Union is now 13-15 (6-8 AAC) this season, while Truett McConnell is 12-15 (5-9 AAC). Up next for Union is the final game of this conference series against Truett McConnell. That matchup is slated for Sunday, March 24, at 3:00 p.m.
