Rossi throws shutout in seven innings as Union defeats No. 11 Reinhardt

 

Barbourville, Ky. – On Saturday, the Union College baseball team faced off against No. 11 Reinhardt in the final matchup of a three-game conference series.

The Bulldogs lost the first two games of the series, but they defeated the Eagles 11-0 in seven innings in the final matchup.

Hunter Rossi added another complete game to his repertoire along with yet another shutout. Rossi tallied five strikeouts, while permitting only four hits and two walks across 93 pitches. His strike percentage was over 50%.

The Bulldogs ignited their offensive in the bottom of the second inning. Logan Romasanta set the tone with a leadoff single, which was followed by a single for Mason Kelley.

Aaron Barrera then stepped up with an RBI single that scored Romasanta to give Union a 1-0 lead. Seth Keener then pinch ran for Barrera, and the Bulldogs capitalized on the momentum.

Sammy Serrano reached first base via an error to load the bases. Nathan McCabe was walked on the next at bat, which scored Kelley.

Luke Pell's RBI sacrifice fly and Diego Clariot's walk maintained the pressure; ultimately culminating in Colton Stegman's RBI sacrifice fly. Union led 4-0 entering the third inning.

In the third inning, Romasanta ignited another offensive surge with a single. Kelley promptly added another single. Barrera's single loaded the bases. Seth Kenner entered the game as a pinch runner for Barrera.

With bases loaded, Luke Pell hit a three-RBI double that propelled Union to a comfortable 7-0 advantage. Sebastian Flores led off with a single and a steal in the fourth inning. Romasanta's third single of the day and Kelley's three-RBI triple extended Union's lead to 9-0.

In the fifth inning, Pell's walk and stolen base setup Clariot's two-run homer. The home run marked his first of the season. It gave the Bulldogs a solidifying 11-0 lead, which allowed Union the chance to end the game early in seven innings.

Despite Reinhardt's efforts in the top of the seventh, Union's defense held firm as the Bulldogs secured an 11-0 victory in seven innings.

Offensively, Romasanta and Kelley both had a three-for-four performance with one RBI and two runs scored. Pell's contribution included four RBIs, a double, and one run scored.

Barrera and Flores also made notable offensive contributions as they went two-for-three and two-for-four respectively. The Bulldogs tallied 12 hits in the matchup.

 

Union is now 11-14 (5-7 AAC) this season, while No. 11 Reinhardt is 17-10 (12-3 AAC). Up next for the Bulldogs is a home game against Alice Lloyd on Tuesday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m.
