Union baseball falls to No. 8 Cumberlands

Barbourville, Ky. - The Union College baseball team played against No. 8 Cumberlands in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday. After defeating the Patriots earlier in the season, the Bulldogs lost 14-3.

Cumberlands surged ahead with an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Patriots would further solidify their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third.

However, the momentum shifted in the bottom of the third when Diego Clariot kickstarted the inning with a double. Then Colton Stegman with a single, which advanced Clariot to third base.

A double play executed by Cumberlands allowed Clariot to cross the plate, which narrowed the margin to 5-1. The Patriots scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nathan McCabe was walked with one out. Mason Kelley was struck by a pitch. Sammy Serrano was also walked, which loaded the bases. Clariot reached first base on an error, while McCabe scored Union's second run of the matchup.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sebastian Flores hit a solo home run. However, the Patriots showed no signs of slowing down as Cumberlands won 14-3 in seven innings.

Carlos Soto, Jose Perez, Eli Sizemore, Bryson Wolfenbarger, and Grayson Makranyi all made an appearance on the mound for Union. Soto collected three strikeouts, while Sizemore had two and Makranyi had one.

Offensively, Flores led the way going two-for-three with two hits, one RBI, one run scored, and one home run.

Union is now 10-12 this season, while Cumberlands is 20-4. Up next for the Bulldogs is a home conference doubleheader against Reinhardt on Thursday, March 14. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
