Union baseball wins the series against Bryan

Dayton Tenn. – On Saturday, the Union College baseball team played game three of its three-game series at Bryan College. The Bulldogs lost the first game, won the second game, and then won the third game 9-7 in nine innings.

In the opening innings, Bryan secured an early 3-0 lead. The momentum shifted in the third inning when Nathan McCabe launched a solo homer over center field to narrow the gap to 3-1.

In the top of the fourth, Sebastian Flores hit a single. A ground out on the next at bat advanced Flores to second base. On the next at bat, Logan Romasanta tallied a single that advanced Flores to third.

Mason Kelley then hit a fielder's choice that scored Flores, while Romasanta was out at second. Kelley would later steal second base.

The tide turned when Luke Pell delivered a monumental two-run homer that propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-3 lead. Despite the Bulldogs' resurgence, the Lions came back in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead.

In the ensuing fifth inning, Sammy Serrano was walked in the first at bat. On the next at bat, Diego Clariot hit another single as Serrano advanced to third. Clariot then got his first stolen base of the day.

Colton Stegman loaded the bases with a walk, but the Bulldogs ultimately did not score in the inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Kelley led off with a single.

Pell joined in with a single of his own, which advanced Kelley to second. Then, McCabe delivered another three-run homer deep over center field. This gave Union a 7-6 lead.

The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie to score at 7-7. Flores walked to start off the top of the ninth. Barrera hit a single, which advanced Flores to second base. Keeping the momentum alive, Romasanta followed suit with another single to load the bases.

Kelley was walked, which scored scoring Flores and gave Union an 8-7 lead. On the next at bat, Pell executed a sacrifice fly that not only scored Barrera, but also advanced Romasanta to third base. The Bulldogs' lead was 9-7, which was ultimately the final score.

 

Offensively, Pell delivered a stellar two-for-four performance with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. Romasanta and McCabe each went two-for-five at the plate. McCabe's performance included four RBIs, two runs scored, and two home runs.

Hunter Rossi and Zach Moore both made an appearance on the mound. Rossi collected five strikeouts, while Moore had three.

 

Union is now 10-11 (4-5 AAC) this season, while Bryan is 12-11 (5-6 AAC). Up next for Union is a home game against No. 8 Cumberlands on Tuesday, March 12. That matchup is slated for 2:00 p.m.
