Union baseball splits two games with Bryan

Dayton, Tenn. - On Thursday, the Union College baseball team played games one and two of its three-game conference series at Bryan. The Bulldogs lost the first game 11-5, but won the second game 10-7 in eight innings.

 

Game One:

The Bulldogs got an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Diego Clariot was walked, while Colton Stegman singled on the next at bat. A sacrifice bunt from Sebastian Flores moved the runners to second and third base respectively.

On the ensuing at bat, Aaron Barrera then stepped up with a two-RBI double that scored Clariot and Stegman. Bryan prevented any additional runs in the side, while the Lions tallied one run in the bottom of the inning.

Bryan scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs responded in the third inning. Clariot started with a double, and then Stegman reached first base with a walk.

With both runners advancing on a groundout, Barrera delivered another two-RBI double, which put the Bulldogs back into the lead at 4-3.

The momentum continued into the fourth inning as Luke Pell hammered a solo home run to extend the Union's lead to 5-3. Sammy Serrano would hit a double later in the side, but Bryan prevented any additional runs in the side.

In the sixth inning with one out, Clariot singled and then Stegman and Sebastian Flores followed with singles of their own to load the bases. Despite the Bulldogs' best efforts, they were unable to convert on the opportunity as the score remained at 5-3.

However, the Lions mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth as they knotted the score at 5-5. Bryan managed to take an 11-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Throughout the game, David Kottmer, Ethan Warren, Dylan Hetzler, and Nathan Van Beek made an appearance on the mound. Warren and Hetzler delivered two strikeouts each, while Kottmer notched one of his own.

Offensively, Barrera delivered a three-for-five performance with two doubles and an impressive four RBIs. Meanwhile, Clariot and Stegman each went two-for-four at the plate, while having two walks a piece.

 

Game Two:

In the top of the second inning, Barrera ignited the Bulldogs' offense with a lead-off double. Jafari Williams entered the game as a pinch runner for Barrera. Logan Romasanta drew a walk that advanced Williams to third on a wild pitch.

Romasanta was caught stealing, but Williams would score to give Union a 1-0 lead. The momentum shifted in the bottom of the fourth when the Lions piled on five runs. Bryan added another run in the bottom of the fifth to seize a commanding 6-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Clariot started with a lead-off walk. Stegman's double on the next at bat sent Clariot to third. Flores drove Clariot home with an RBI single.

Later in the side with the bases loaded, Mason Kelley tallied an RBI single that scored Flores. On the next at bat, Pell then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Barrera home and advance Romasanta to third. Nathan McCabe then delivered a three-run homer as the Bulldogs took a 7-6 lead.

Union loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with Barrera, Flores, and Stegman on base. Romasanta recorded a two-RBI single that scored Flores and Stegman, while advancing Barrera to third base.

Later in the side, Pell tallied a sacrifice groundout that scored Barrera and moved Romasanta to second. Union led 10-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Ultimately, Union won 10-7 in eight innings.

Barrera led the way going two-for-two with one double and two runs scored. McCabe went two-for-three with three RBIs, one homerun, and one run scored. Flores, Romasanta, and Stegman all batted .500. 

Carter Finlay, Braylon Greene, Christian McCollough, and Jackson Clark made an appearance on the mound for the Bulldogs. Finlay, McCollough, and Clark each had three strikeouts, while Greene had one. Finlay had zero hits allowed, Clark had one, and McCollough had two.

On the day, Barrera led the way by going five-for-seven with four RBIs and two runs scored.

 

Union is now 9-11 (3-5 AAC) this season, while Bryan is 12-10 (5-5 AAC). Up next for Union is the final game of this conference series against Bryan. That matchup is slated for Saturday, March 9, at 1:00 p.m.
