Union baseball falls short at Midway

 Midway, Ky. – The Union College baseball team played one nine-inning game today at Midway. The Bulldogs fell short 9-4 to the Eagles.

 

Midway got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The lead would be extended to 6-0 in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth, Aaron Barrera hit a double to left-center field. Jafari Williams took over as the pinch runner for Barrera. On the next at bat, Mason Kelley delivered an RBI double that scored Williams and narrowed the gap to 6-1.

The Eagles continued to score in the top of the fifth as they extended their lead to 7-1. As the game progressed into the sixth inning, Barrera started the inning with a lead-off single. He then stole second and third base.

Later in the side, Luke Pell hit an RBI single that scored Barrera to trim the deficit to 7-2. Despite the Bulldogs' efforts, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities in the top of the seventh inning allowing Midway to seize their chance and score two runs. The Eagles led 9-2.

In the top of the eighth inning, Pell hit a single up the middle. Pell then stole second and third base on wild pitches. Pell would score off an RBI sacrifice grounder by Sammy Serrano to make the score 9-3.

In the final inning, Trey Hollon led off with a walk. Diego Clariot entered the matchup as a pinch runner for Hollon. Barrera then delivered another hit with an RBI double, which scored Clariot. Midway won 9-4.

Pitchers Jackson Clark, Braylon Greene, Eli Sizemore, and Ethan Warren all made an appearance on the mound for Union. Warren, Clark, and Sizemore each tallied one strikeout, while Greene recorded three.

Offensively, Pell went two-for-three with one RBI, one run, and one walk. Barrera went three-for-five with one RBI, one run, and two doubles. Stegman went two-for-four and Tyler Bean went one-for-two.

 

Union is now 8-10 this season, while Midway is 11-8. Up next for Union is a conference matchup at Bryan on Friday, March 8. The game is slated for 5:00 p.m.
