Union baseball splits with Georgetown in final two games of series

 

Georgetown, Ky. – On Sunday, the Union College baseball team played game two and three of a three-game series against Georgetown. The Bulldogs won the first game 2-1 in extra innings, but fell 7-0 in the second matchup. Union fell short 2-1 in the series.

 

Game One:

In the bottom of the first inning, Georgetown seized an early 1-0 advantage that held firm until the top of the sixth inning.

Aaron Barrera tallied a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning. Jafari Williams stepped in as the pinch runner. Williams stole second base, and later stole third base. Williams would score when Luke Pell delivered an RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.

At the end of the ninth inning, the score was still 1-1. In the top of the 10th inning, Colton Stegman hit a double down the left field line.

Nick Seelman then executed a sacrifice bunt that advanced Stegman to third base. In the next at bat, Barrera hit a sacrifice fly to give Union a 2-1 lead, which would become the final score.

Throughout the game, the pitching trio of Zach Moore, Dalton Kottmer, and Christian McCollough took to the mound. Moore and Kottmer each threw a strikeout, while McCollough tallied two. Kottmer's four-inning stint on the mound yielded just one hit.

  

Game Two:

 

Georgetown got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second inning, Nathan McCabe ignited Union's offensive with a double down the right field line.

Later in the side, Jarrod Seibel tallied a single to push McCabe to third base, but Georgetown prevented Union from scoring in the side.

In the bottom of the third inning, Georgetown tallied three runs to take a 4-0 lead. McCabe hit another double in the top of the fourth with Seelman following up with a single that advanced McCabe to third. The Tigers prevented Union from scoring in the side.

Georgetown added two more runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-0; a lead that was maintained throughout the final out.

Hunter Rossi and Carlos Soto each took the mound in the second game. Rossi recorded two strikeouts, and Soto added one to the tally. 

McCabe led the way in the second game going two-for-three with two doubles. Seelman and Seibel both contributed with one hit each in their two plate appearances. On the day, Stegman led offensively with a four-for-eight performance at the plate.

  

Union is now 8-9 this season, while Georgetown is 8-8. Up next for the Bulldogs is a single nine-inning game tomorrow, March 3, at Midway. The first pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
