Union baseball splits with Johnson; Hunter Rossi throws a one-hitter in nine innings

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College baseball team played game one and game two of its three-game conference series against Johnson on Sunday. The Bulldogs won the first game 4-0, while losing the second game 13-5.

 

Game One:

In the bottom of the second inning, Mason Kelley led off with a double. Nathan McCabe was walked on the ensuing at bat. With two runners on base, Sammy Serrano delivered an RBI single that scored Kelley to give Union a 1-0 lead.

Building on their momentum, the Bulldogs continued in the bottom of the fourth. McCabe ignited the inning with a single. McCabe would advance to second on a passed ball before scoring of an RBI double by Aaron Barrera.

Jafari Williams then reached first base on an error; he advanced to third base, while Jonathan Miles scored. Miles was pinch running for Barrera. On the next at bat, Serrano delivered an RBI groundout that scored Williams. This extended Union's lead to 4-0, which would be the final score.

Kelley led the way going two-for-four at the plate with two hits and a run scored. Serrano also made his mark with two RBIs.

On the pitching front, Hunter Rossi was the only pitcher through nine innings. Rossi held Johnson's offense at bay as he had a no-hitter until the top of the ninth inning when Johnson tallied its only hit of the game.

Nonetheless, Rossi's one-hitter secured a shutout victory. He recorded eight strikeouts over nine innings of play.

The most recent occasion of a Union pitcher completing a full nine innings occurred when AJ Villa faced off against Truett McConnell on May 1st, 2019.

 

Game Two:

The Bulldogs remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Tyler Bean hit a solo home run.

In the bottom of the third, Sebastian Flores walked to kickstart the offense. Flores would advance to second on a passed ball, while Logan Romasanta then tallied a single that advanced Flores to third base. Bean then delivered a three-run home run for his second homer of the day.

Union's final run of the game occurred when Colton Stegman hit a home run in the seventh inning. Johnson won 13-5 in seven innings.

Bean led the way in the second game going two-for-three. He recorded three hits, two runs scored, and four RBIs. Stegman and Johnathan Miles each went one-for-one at the plate, while Stegman also tallied an RBI.

 

The Bulldogs are now 7-6 (2-3 AAC) this season, while Johnson is 9-5 (1-1 AAC). Up next for Union is game three of this series against Johnson tomorrow, Feb. 26, at 12:00 p.m.
